Internet, December 14, 2005. Now you can use Yandex to search not only the web but also your personal computer. Today, Yandex presents new software, Personal Search, designed to find messages, documents and other files on the user’s personal computer and in the local network. The program is freeware.
The application incorporates the code used in the search system www.yandex.ru, so all Internet search skills can be employed here, too. Yandex Personal Search operates under Windows 98, 2000, XP, and 2003, providing full-text search over DOC, XLS, PPT, PDF, SWF, HTML, and TXT file types, as well as MP3 music files and Outlook and Outlook Express email databases.
“The amounts of data on personal computers are growing so fast that sometimes locating the necessary file becomes quite an issue,” says Alexander Bykov, project manager. “For users working primarily with the Russian language, morphology analysis is vital. Now they can retrieve a message or an important document lost somewhere on the disk, even if they do not remember the exact form of the required word. We strove to make searching the personal computer as convenient as searching the Web.”
Yandex develops client software since 1996. First were search solutions: a service for webmasters (Yandex.Server), a tool to search static data sets (Yandex.Publisher), and a library for software developers (Yandex.SDK). This May, Yandex started selling Spamooborona, a server-side spam protection system. Yandex Personal Search is the first application designed for all users and requiring no special knowledge. What is more, it can even operate without Internet connection.
