Ilya Segalovich (1964—2013), a co-founder of Yandex, an information retrieval scientist and a search technology expert. Together with his old school friend Arkady Volozh, in 1993 he developed one of the pioneering word-form analysers for the Russian language. This was the foundation for what would later become one of the world’s top search engines, Yandex.
Yandex evolved from a small team of technology enthusiasts working at a telecom equipment distributor, CompTek, into a standalone company in 2000. Ilya became its Chief Technology Officer in charge of core search technologies, including the web crawler, ranking algorithms and machine-learning systems.
In 1997, Ilya and his wife Maria Yeliseyeva founded Maria's Children, a charity which uses art therapy to provide physical, psychological and social rehabilitation to orphans and children with special needs.
